Car Insurance Ford (Car Insurance). does a biplane give more lift?does a biplane give more lift? i have seen a bi plane at the aviation museum and it seems simple to me that 2 wings are better than 1 but why have aircraft builders abandoned the upper wing and if a 747 had a biplane design could it lift a greater payload? The weight of the "extra wing" and the added drag of that wing tend to offset the advantages, thus the reason you don't see them much anymore. It "might" lift a slightly better payload but would do so at a large price in speed and gas. Quite the opposite, monoplanes give more lift because there is less drag. The amount of lift that can be augmented by leading edge and trailing edge flaps is much larger than a "biplane pair" of "hard wings" (without flaps) could do - And the fact that you can "raise the flaps" for cruise flight, and supress all the extra drag all these items generate, thing you could not do with the "extra wing" - Biplanes were popular in the early days of aviation for structural reasons... aircraft structural design hadn't proceeded to the point where the long thin wings common on modern aircraft were possible. The only way to get lots of wing area was to use two wings and a truss structure between them (i.e. biplane). This gave the desired wing area, but also extra drag. Modern aircraft can get the wing area without external bracing, so a biplane configuration is less efficient. Biplanes are still used on some specialized areas, mostly recreational and aerobatics, where the compact structure and maneuverability is more important than efficiency. It doesn't lift a greater payload, but the wing loading (pound/square foot) is lighter, so the structure can be lighter, it can fly slower, etc. In basic terms, biplane design is good for slow flight(80 mph and lower) where you want good manuverability and compact wing length and you don't care about the drag penalty(and fuel efficiency). Their cool.... but outdated as efficiency is concerned. There's less lift per square foot because the two wings interfere with each other. If you remember airfoil theory there's low pressure on top of a wing and high pressure underneath it. That's what creates lift. On a biplane the high pressure under the top wing increases the pressure on the top of the low wing, or you can say the low pressure on top of the bottom wing reduces the high pressure under the top wing. Either way there's a significant loss of lift. The corner between a wing and a fuselage produces a lot of drag due to interference. The fillet between the wing and fuselage is there to reduce that drag but it's impossible to eliminate it. Two wings doubles the problem. A biplane can be lighter because the bracing between the wings creates a very strong box structure, but the drag of the braces is horrendous. not really, it's sorta why you don't see many modern planes w/ 2 wings Howard L has the real reason biplanes aren't as efficient as monoplanes. If they were, the shorter span, less structure required for the same wing area, would give them an advantage. The upper wing does interfere with the lower. That's why the wings were staggered. Beachcraft with the D-17 and the Hyperbipe tried to beat this with a "negative stagger" but it still was a factor. A biplane doubles the wing area, and thus nearly doubles the available lift when compared with a plane that would only one of the two wing of the biplane, if that wing is the exact same size. Notice the bit about "nearly doubles the available lift" as interference between wings reduces the overall effectiveness. A 747 could be a biplane but it would fly a lot slower as 2 wings so close will interfere with one another at higher speeds thus negating any possible advantage over just having longer wings If you increased the lift and the payload, the plane would go much slower at the same power because more of that power would be going to generating lift. Biplanes are generally preferred in applications where low speed is desired. In other applications, if you want more lift, just fly faster. Auto parts : Garage Floor Coating Acura 1995 . If your car could talk, it would probably agree. When you consider that the temperature in your vehicle's combustion chambers can get as high as 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit, with high pressures, the shock of combustion, and many metal parts rubbing and grinding against one another, you can see that a vehicle that is not ade quately protected against heat and friction will swiftly come to an untimely 732

Luckily, this kind of protection is cheap and easy to ensure. It's a simple matter of providing sufficient lubrication to keep things running smoothly and then making sure that your vehicle gets regular attention. Changing the oil is the most essential thing you can do to give your car a long and happy life. This chapter tells you how to choose the right kind of oil for your vehicle, how frequently you should change the oil for maximum performance, and how to do the job quickly and easily. Hou) OH Benefits \lour Vehicle To choose the proper kind of oil, you should know what that oil is expected to do. When your car is at rest, the oil slops around quietly in a container located at the bottom of the crankcase, just below the engine (see Figure 15-1). This container is called the oil pan. When the car is running, oil is pumped by an oil pump through holes and channels in the engine, where the oil helps cool and clean the engine and provides a nice, slippery cushion that keeps moving parts from grinding one another into oblivion. The following sections explain in greater detail how oil benefits your vehicle. yes well it depends what for Porsche 944. * Because the oil pan is located below the engine, where the air that rushes past the moving car can cool it, the oil picks up some of the heat as it travels around inside the engine and then cools off when it circulates through the oil pan. Although this isn't enough to keep most engines sufficiently cool with out a cooling system, it helps. Oil keeps your engine clean Most engine oils contain some detergent, which helps flush out the muck that accumulates inside your engine. Not only does detergent remove and dis solve this old sludge; it also helps prevent new gobs of the stuff from forming. Believe me, you have no idea of the meaning of any of those yucky Ford . Masses of black slimy stuff, hunks of undefinable vile ness, and pebble-like particles cling to everything. It's hard to see how these engines function at all. Even more depressing are the all-too-visible signs of wear on steel parts that have been eroded away by this ugly stuff. If your car hasn't had its oil changed in at least 6,000 miles, you can consider the growls coming out of its engine to be cries of pain! Oil cuts down on friction By far the most important thing that the oil in your engine does is to form a cushion between moving parts to help them slide past one another easily. Ford .
